Explore Our Beginnings

How It Started

The origins of the concept trace back to the Technical University of Darmstadt, where co-founder Prof. Dr. Anna Lisa Martin-Niedecken studied sports science and later completed her doctoral thesis on movement-based exergames. Her research laid the scientific foundation for what has evolved into SPHERY and THE SPHERE today: an accessible, motivating, and highly effective training experience for people of all fitness levels.

Over several years, she and an interdisciplinary team of researchers, designers, and technologists developed evidence-based training methodologies and innovative digital tools — with the ExerCube as the technological centerpiece.

Building on this foundation, the team is now launching THE SPHERE: the first boutique fitness concept to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge technology, scientific insight, and multi-sensory design.

THE SPHERE is not just a finished product — it is a living ecosystem. A space that evolves together with its community. The ambition is to continuously create training experiences that reflect contemporary needs, inspire long-term engagement, and deliver measurable impact.

HIGHLIGHTS

The founders of Sphery developing the ExerCube – the beginning of a vision to unite movement, technology, and play.

The Beginning

In 2010, Anna started investigating so-called Exergames as a scholar of the Darmstadt Graduate School ‘Topology of Technology’ at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Inspired by the potential she decided to investigate the topic further in her PhD. Title: Balancing fun and exertion in Exergames.
